CHAMPAIGN - The UIUC GK-12 program held its winter program meeting on February 21 at UIUC. The focus was technology and technology-related development. Sessions covering beginner- and advanced-level MS Office techniques, Macromedia Dreamweaver, and Adobe Photoshop proved helpful for eveyrone.
In addition to software tutorials, general technology topics were covered. Digital media, computer hardware, copyright law, and online searching tips were covered. Below, we have included some of the online searching material.

- Google will correct any obvious misspellings
- Images can be searched for specifically, and can even be filtered by image size.
- Searches should be as direct as possible; for example, use“evolution lesson plans” (with quotes) rather than just “evolution.”
In large web documents where you want to quickly find the sentence that matched your search term, use the CACHED link (to the right of the description) to highlight your search terms, or, when unavailable, hit CONTROL + F to initiate a search. The CACHE link is also useful if the website is not working; clicking on it will bring up an backed-up version of the website.
Other useful search engines:
www.clusty.com - an interesting search tool that organizes your search into similar topics (clusters)
Amazon.com - Amazon has a full text feature ("Search Inside”) that lets you search for text inside many of their books. It also allows you to look at the table of contents and bibliography
An important thing to keep in mind: always make sure to give credit where it is due. Sites that include scholarly work should cite the author for its intellectual content AND cite the Website's address and the last date visited. It is a good idea to print out hard copies of central websites, especially of magazines and newspapers, as the link may disappear.
